Helping in Overtime: Cardinals Continue Service In Time of Need
Leading up to spring break, UIW student-athletes were on pace to break the program record for service hours in an academic year, recording 5,365 hours for 2019-2020. However, the coronavirus pandemic quickly put everything on hold, including spring sports for the 2020 campaign.
Despite the uncertain times, the Cardinal student-athletes made it a priority to continue helping their community. Having already adopted classrooms at Martin Luther King Academy, the student-athletes created “Storytime with Red” and “Workout with Red,” videos where the student-athletes filmed themselves in their homes either reading a children’s book or doing an instructional workout video.
On top of the online videos, the student-athletes continued to raise money for the Thrive Youth Center, an LGBTQ homeless shelter, as well as the San Antonio Food bank.
The Cardinals recorded 6,051.5 hours of service and set a new program record.
